The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) will significantly benefit low-income households in several ways:
- No-cost home retrofits: CGHAP will provide free energy-efficient upgrades to low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants, including insulation and heat pumps. This eliminates the financial barrier that often prevents low-income households from making energy-efficient improvements.
- Reduced energy bills: By implementing these energy-efficient upgrades, participants can expect to see substantial reductions in their monthly energy costs. For example, families can save over $400 a year by installing a heat pump.
- Direct installation approach: The program will handle all logistics associated with planning and paying for home retrofits on behalf of participating households. This streamlined process makes it easier for low-income families to benefit from the program without dealing with complex paperwork or upfront costs.
- Inclusion of renters: The program will include renters, which is crucial as 62% of low-income families are renters. This inclusion ensures that a significant portion of vulnerable households can access the benefits of energy-efficient upgrades.
- Addressing energy poverty: With nearly 2 million Canadian households experiencing energy poverty, the program aims to alleviate this issue by reducing energy costs for those most in need.
- Improved living conditions: Beyond financial benefits, the program will enhance the comfort and health of low-income households by improving their home’s energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
- Environmental impact: While primarily focused on affordability, the program will also help low-income households reduce their carbon footprint, contributing to Canada’s overall climate goals.
The CGHAP is set to begin in the first half of 2025, with $800 million allocated over five years. This significant investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to making energy efficiency accessible to all Canadians, regardless of income level.
